Blue Springs State Park The largest spring on the St. Johns River, Blue Spring is a designated Manatee Refuge and the winter home (mid-November through March) to a growing population of West Indian Manatees. Birding, always rewarding at Blue Spring is enhanced as migratory species begin making an appearance. Soon, manatee will begin visiting the spring run as the days grow shorter and cold fronts regularly march across North and Central Florida. By late October to mid November, manatee season will begin in earnest as river temperatures drop below seventy degrees; as Blue Spring is a warm water refuge for manatees coming in from the cold river.
